recent titles, The Day They Put a Tax on Rainbows, and other stories by Johnny Valentine ($12.95, hardcover) and Uncle What-Is-It Is Coming to Visit! by Michael Willhoite ($12.95, hardcover), in which Igor and Tiffany learn that their gay uncle is coming to visit. Before their mother can explain what "gay" means, she is interrupted, and the children become alarmed when some older kids tell them about what gay is. All the stereotypes are shattered when Uncle Brett finally arrives.
Finally, to round out my holiday giftgiving list, three fun mens' fiction books: Larry Duplechan's Captain Swing (Alyson, $15.95, hardcover, 184 pp.) in which Johnny Ray Rousseau, the African-American hero of Duplechan's earlier books Eight Days a Week, Blackbird, and Tangled Up in Blue, makes a return. Duplechan's prose is light, funny, erotic. This would be a great book for a winter vacation at the beach. The Unfinished by the late Jay B. Laws (Alyson, $9.95, paper, 283 pp.) is a horror story. The Unfinished had their lives interrupted by untimely death. They are chained to earth, until their stories are known. As in his previous book Steam (Alyson), Laws-who died of AIDS complications in November 1992-combines horror and the erotic. In Grant Michaels' mystery Dead on Your Feet (St. Martin's Press, $19.95, hardcover,
246 pp.) smart-aleck queer hairdresserturned-amateur sleuth Stan Kraychik returns. (The previous two books in which he appeared were A Body to Dye For and Love You to Death, both St. Martin's Press.) When a renowned ballet director is found

gruesomely murdered, Stan is pressed into investigating, despite his suspicions that his handsome choreographer boyfriend is having an affair with the prime suspect, an orchestral conductor. Lots of standard mystery stereotype characters here: the ballet mistress, Madame Rubinskaya; a homophobic dancer; the wealthy ballet financier; a cute houseboy. There's nothing in Dead on Your Feet to strain the brain, but for a cold winter afternoon in front of the fire, it's worth a look.
